History of Hermanus
The beautiful seaside village of Hermanus has a proud history dating to the early 1800's when Hermanus Pieters, a shepard and teacher followed the elephant path down to the sea where he discovered a fresh spring . He chose to set up camp here not only because of the unrivaled beauty, but it also offered fine grazing for his livestock.
Soon after, surrounding farming districts heard of the fine situation Pieters had found himself in and started their journey towards Hermanuspietersfontein. For a while it was a fun holiday for the whole family with father fishing and mum and children enjoying the sea. When winter set in they returned to their inland farms. So whilst the farmers had found the area, it was the fisherman, lured by a plentiful supply of fish, who settled here and helped build it into the village it is today.

In 1886 the local school and church were built and a community was slowly developing. By then the name of the area was simply shortened to HERMANUS. The news of its beauty, excellent fishing and fresh champagne air spread as far afield as London where doctors were known to prescribe a trip to Hermanus for their patients.
Over the years Hermanus has become known as a majestic holiday destination ,offering locals and tourists the best land based 'whale watching platform in the world. Whilst the town has grown with the developing of a new ,harbour and a village square complete with whale watching tower, locals are careful to uphold the legacy left by one of the first regular visitors to Hermanus - William Hoy. As general manager of the railways he ensured the natural beauty of Hermanus would remain unspoilt by blocking any attempt to extend the railwayline to the village. His efforts ensure that just 100 metres from Mitchell guesthouse is the only railway station in the country with no trains.
